Katrina Amnesty Campaign on Amnesty Sunday: A Faith-Based Day of Healing and Reconciliation
Sponsored by : Critical Resistance
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of people were arrested for “crimes” related to caring for the basic needs of themselves and their families. New Orleanians with charges such as public intoxication and trespassing spent nearly a year in prison, but still await court appearances. Still others have a conviction on their record – damaging their present and future opportunities for jobs, housing, and education. In the spirit of healing and reconciliation, the faith community is coming together on August 20, Katrina Amnesty Sunday, to present a faith-based appeal for forgiveness on behalf of many New Orleanians whose cases were affected by the storm. Here’s how you can help commemorate the first anniversary of Katrina: • On Amnesty Sunday develop themes of reconciliation and forgiveness of charges for the meditation, homily, message, or sermon. • Participate in an interfaith news conference with other members of the faith community. Encourage your congregation to show New Orleanians the power of healing and forgiveness. • Endorse Katrina Amnesty Sunday. As we re-build the City and our communities, we must address genuine public safety and community needs. Please join us. Contact Critical Resistance at 504-304-3784.

The curse without a cause doesn’t come. Why then did “Little Qatar”, (Hebrew for Katrina) and her “Pearl” (Hebrew for Rita) wreak such havoc here on the Gulf Coast? Exactly what does God say about the land of Israel? What has America’s church been taught? Hurricane Katrina Anniversary Ritual
I am a New Orleanian evacuee who has temporarily relocated to Austin. I currently have an exhibition up at the Dougherty Arts Center through August. This exhibit is comprised of artifacts I rescued from my flooded house as well as new work informed by the exile experience. I’ve also built a site-specific sculpture of New Orleans’ levee system that contains organic elements and the hand-written names of the victims of the storm. Please join me on August 29th, the anniversary of the breaking of the New Orleans levees, when I will be giving away the remains of the levee sculpture, which will be beautifully contained in glass jars. I am inviting everyone to join me in paying tribute to the city’s victims by reading their names aloud, beginning when the first levee broke at 9:30 a.m. In this way we may all honor and ritualize what is one of the darkest and most profound days in our collective history. 3rd National Conference on Race & Ethnicity "Making the Invisible Visible: A Dialogue About the Lessons Learned in the Aftermath of Katrina"
Sponsored by : American Bar Association Council on Racial & Ethnic Justice
The primary goals of the Conference are to: (1) conduct a productive dialogue among the survivors, planners (commissioners), and the participants; (2) produce an “Issues Resource Guide” which lists the types of problems that might emerge due to race and ethnicity, how to avoid inequities based on race and ethnicity, and how to mitigate the problems. The “Issues Resource Guide” will deal with issues ranging from communications and language skills, to resource allocation, to pre-existing economic and social inequities; and (3) assist the survivors of Katrina with the re-building of their lives, restore justice and provide equity and respect to those victims that have been treated unjustly.
